Make Your Own Popcorn

Why not make your own popcorn? It’s easy and inexpensive. It’s also a low fat, high fibre snack that the whole family can enjoy. You can make up a big batch and store it in an airtight container.

There’s the added benefit of removing the additives and preservatives that come in prepackaged popcorn, along with reducing unnecessary plastic and packaging. In this recipe we use coconut oil which gives a lovely subtle coconut flavour. If you’re not a fan, you can always swap it for olive oil.

Get creative with your popcorn too.

Experiment with different seasonings, adding seeds or nuts, or even melting a little dark chocolate over the top.

Ingredients

  • 1.5 Tbsp (30g) Un-Popped Popping Corn Kernels
  • 1 tsp (5g) Coconut Oil (liquid/melted)
  • Sea Salt to taste

Directions

Place popping corn kernels in a microwave safe container with the lid sitting on top - leave a very small space for steam to escape.

Microwave on high for between 2 - 5 mins depending on the amount of corn, and your microwave. Keep a watch on it - once there are several seconds between pops you’re done.

Remove container carefully - it will be hot!

Remove lid and pour in liquid coconut oil. Grind in sea salt to your liking.

Replace lid and shake well to cover popcorn with oil and salt. (Your container could still be very hot)

Pour into bowl to serve. Enjoy!
